So, Who Exactly is In Charge Here?

It’s a question we often ask in daily life—usually when we’re about to complain or give praise for a job well done. But how often do we actually ask it of ourselves?

Have you ever noticed the voices in your head? The ones that chime in with advice, hesitation, doubt, motivation? The ones that say:

“You’re not ready.”

“You should wait.”

“You’ve got this.”

“There has to be more than this.”

Here’s the truth: all of those voices are real. They live inside each of us—lifting us up or shrinking us down. The trick lies in recognizing them:

-Who’s speaking?

-Who are we letting speak?

-And who’s being silenced?

Sometimes it feels like I have a split personality. Spoiler alert: I do. And so do you.

In fact, there are nine distinct voices that make up your inner world. Picture them all gathered around a big boardroom table—some loud and persuasive, some timid and unsure, some interrupting with passion, others quietly observing.

And at the center of that table?

I listen. I lead.
I listen. I lead.

Sits your Inner Leader.

Your Inner Leader’s job is to listen to all of the voices with presence and discernment—to guide decisions that align with the direction you truly want your life to go. By nature, this part of you is wise, compassionate, courageous, and composed. But that doesn’t mean it always has the final say.

Some voices can be overpowering. Fear can shout down Courage. Doubt can muzzle Curiosity. Perfectionism might storm in with a checklist. It’s the Inner Leader’s responsibility to stay aware of the dynamics at the table—and make space for all parts to be heard, without letting any one of them run the whole show.

It’s become a bit of a hobby for me, tuning in to these voices. Paying attention to which ones I’ve amplified throughout different seasons of my life… and which ones I’ve ignored. This growing awareness has strengthened my Inner Leader. She’s still learning, always evolving—but she shows up with more grace, more guts, and more grounded clarity than ever before.

So, I’ll end where I began—with a question I now ask myself often:

“Who exactly is in charge of me today?”
